Running Out of Favours

from Bridge of Sighs by Dave Bradley

/

about

This song was originally going to be a 1+1 vocal+guitar acoustic number in the James Taylor style, but once I'd set a drumtrack going to keep me in time it took on a life of its own. The addition of electric guitar and bass nudged it even further away from my original idea until you hear what you hear now.

UPDATE: Re-recorded all the vocals, still quite raw.

My voice is a bit raw after a heavy-duty pub gig on Friday and choral rehearsals on the Saturday before I laid this down...ah well. I've called it Mix1a, I might re-record the vocal. If you download it and I change it, I'll send you the replacement file.

Funky rock song with splashes of Nile Rodgers' Chic (although I avoided using his "three-strings-at-a-time" technique on the Fender, Isley Brothers, David Bowie, Queen, Steely Dan, Paul Weller, James Taylor, Gerry Rafferty, and a stack of other influences.

lyrics

You stepped off the train
There was nobody waiting
You looked down at the rails
The rain pounded, the light was fading

Are you running out of favours?
Are you running out on me?
Are you looking for a saviour
to confiscate the fear?

You knocked on the door
Why was nobody waiting?
You looked up at the rain
Your heart pounding those words berating

You're riding high on danger
You're running to be free
But you're running out of favours
Wishing you were never deceived
